will i regret my tattoo?
7 questions to ask yourself before you book
Getting a tattoo is exciting, but it’s completely normal to wonder, “What if I regret it?”
It’s one of the most common questions people ask before booking, especially if it’s their first tattoo.
The truth is, most people who take the time to plan their tattoo carefully don’t regret getting tattooed. When regret does happen, it’s often because the decision was rushed, the artist wasn’t the right fit, or the design wasn’t truly what they wanted.
Before you book your appointment, ask yourself these seven questions.
1. Have I Loved this idea for a while?
Trends come and go.
If you’ve only wanted the tattoo for a few days, there’s no harm in waiting. A design you’ve loved for months—or even years—is much more likely to be something you’ll still appreciate in the future.
There’s no prize for getting tattooed as quickly as possible.
2. Am I getting this tattoo for me?
The best tattoos are personal.
Whether it’s meaningful, purely artistic or something you’ve always wanted, make sure the decision is yours, not because your friends have tattoos, social media made it popular, or someone else is encouraging you.
A tattoo should reflect you.
3. Have I chosen the right tattoo artist?
Not every tattoo artist specialises in the same style.
If you’re after fine line, realism, Japanese, blackwork or micro realism, look for an artist whose portfolio consistently reflects that style.
Choosing the right artist is one of the biggest factors in whether you’ll love your tattoo years from now.
4. Am I happy with the placement?
Placement can completely change how a tattoo feels.
Think about:
How visible you want it to be.
How it will work with future tattoos.
How it complements the natural shape of your body.
Sometimes a small adjustment in placement makes a huge difference to the final result.
5. Am I okay with my tattoo changing over time?
Every tattoo changes slightly as your skin ages.
That’s normal.
Good tattoos are designed to age well, but no tattoo looks exactly the same twenty years later. Sun protection, proper aftercare and choosing an experienced artist all help your tattoo stay looking its best for years to come.
6. Have I asked questions?
A good tattoo studio should never make you feel rushed.
Ask about the design, pricing, healing, placement or anything else you’re unsure about.
The more informed you are before your appointment, the more confident you’ll feel walking into it.
7. If I woke up tomorrow and couldn’t get this tattoo, would I still want it next month?
This is one of the simplest ways to check your decision.
If the answer is yes, that’s a good sign you’re making the choice because it’s something you’ve genuinely wanted, not because of excitement in the moment.
Sometimes waiting a little longer gives you even more confidence.
So… will you regret your tattoo?
Only you can answer that.
But taking the time to choose a design you love, finding an artist whose work matches your vision, and avoiding rushed decisions can dramatically reduce the chance of regret.
At Monarch Tattoo Studio, we’d much rather help someone make the right decision than pressure them into booking before they’re ready. If that means refining an idea, changing the design, or even waiting a little longer, that’s okay.
A great tattoo isn’t just about great artwork, it’s about feeling confident in your decision every time you look at it.
